A Toronto-based rapper and his girlfriend face charges in a robbery at a Leaside jewelry store last year which resulted in a clerk being shot.

Kevin Williams, known on stage as "Mayhem Morearty," and Sarah Patsula face three charges each in connection with the robbery at Arax Jewellers near Eglinton Avenue East and Bayview Avenue in August 2010.

Police said they're still searching for a third suspect, who is believed to have shot one of the store employees during the heist.

"He was the man we believe actually pulled the trigger to shoot at the store clerk," Const. Tony Vella told CTV Toronto.

Surveillance footage captured during the robbery shows a black Audi, driven by a woman, parked at the back of Arax Jewellers.

Police said two masked men, both of whom were armed, used the vehicle as a getaway car after they robbed the store.

During the robbery, one of the intruders shot the clerk.

The charges were laid on Monday, a day after officers said they found a portion of the stolen jewellery through a series of search warrants.

Williams was notified of the offences from his room in Maplehurst Correctional Facility, where he is awaiting a court appearance on a series of unrelated gun charges.

In 2009, the Ontario Arts Council awarded the 31-year-old rap artist with a $6,500 grant for his music.

Williams and Patsula are charged with:

  • Conspiracy to commit indictable offence
  • Robbery while armed with a firearm
  • Aggravated assault
