Police continue to investigate the deaths of a mother and her two young son after their bodies were found in a Toronto apartment over the weekend.

Their identities were released on Monday in a police statement.

Investigators say Zahra Mohamoud Abdille, 43, Faris Abdille, 13, and Zain Abdille, 8, were found dead inside an apartment unit in Toronto's Thorncliffe Park neighbourhood on Saturday.

Police did not say what the cause of death was, but investigators previously said autopsies were scheduled for Monday.

"We are treating this case very seriously," Det. Tam Bui told reporters on Sunday.

Friends on Tuesday confirmed to CTV Toronto two undated photos that show the young boys.

Police continue to investigate if the three deaths are linked to another incident that prompted the closure of a section of the Don Valley Parkway on Saturday.

The body of a man was found on the busy highway, forcing the closure of the roadway for several hours while officers investigated.

"Homicide continues to work with Traffic Services – Hit and Run Section on the connection to their investigation on the Don Valley Parkway that same day," police said in the statement on Monday.

A spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board said Faris Abdille attended Westwood Middle School, and his brother was a student at William Burgess Elementary School.

"Our thoughts are with the family, friends and teachers at this difficult time," TDSB communications officer Ryan Bird said in a statement on Monday. "Counselling is in place at the schools and will remain for as long as needed."
