Police went door-to-door in an east-end Toronto neighbourhood Saturday, hoping to find witnesses to an unsolved shooting last September that left a father dead.

Jahmeel Spence's fiancee, Shivonne Clarke, said he was "a good man."

She hoped police would find clues to lead them to his killer.

"I want this for my children," she said.

"They need to know that whoever killed their father, he was found and he was convicted and he was put behind bars."

The 27-year-old was gunned down behind his home near Lawrence Avenue East and Bellamy Road North, as his relatives gathered for a barbecue.

His family had already endured another tragic death: in 1996, Spence's teenaged younger brother was fatally stabbed in Kennedy subway station.

On Saturday, Det. Sgt. Wayne Banks said homicide detective would not give up in the search for Spence's murderer. He hoped that witnesses in their neighbourhood would come forward.

Investigators believe there was only one shooter, and Spence may have been targeted.

"We are confident that somebody has seen or heard something," Banks said. "It may be that one clue that helps us put the puzzle together."
