AURORA, Ont. - Ontario Provincial Police are launching a spring safety blitz this weekend, telling drivers to buckle up or face steep fines.
The week-long campaign starts Saturday and targets drivers and passengers who aren't wearing seatbelts.
Officers will also be focusing on child restraints -- making sure children are properly strapped in and their seats correctly installed.
Anyone who fails to buckle up faces a $240 fine and two demerit points.
Provincial police say 285 people died last year in car crashes on roads they patrol and in 71 of those deaths, seatbelts were a factor.
More than 29,000 charges for seatbelt offences were laid in 2011, up by nearly 3,000 from 2010.
