Ontario Provincial Police are treating the death of a female pedestrian on the QEW as a homicide and have arrested one suspect.

Officers had restricted access to the highway at Eastport Drive in Burlington from about 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday after a woman was hit in a southbound lane north of Hamilton.

The woman was badly injured when emergency crews arrived at the scene at about 6:15 a.m. She was later pronounced dead in hospital.

Police are trying to determine why the woman was on the highway in the first place. Officials are investigating if the woman was pushed from a moving vehicle.

OPP Sgt. David Woodford said police were interviewing witnesses and will investigate further.

"The sequence of events right now (is) undetermined and that's part of our investigation," he said.

Police are still trying to identify the woman. An autopsy was conducted on Sunday.

The suspect who was arrested has not been identified.

Charges have not yet been laid.
