Police have identified the body of a man found shot to death in a wooded area behind the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre.

Evan Andrew Rouse was found by a cyclist along a mountain bike path in a densely brushed area north of Sheppard Avenue on the west side of Bathurst Street.

The area is often populated with seniors and children who live in the area. It backs onto the parking lot of the popular community centre.

Det. Sgt. Pauline Gray told reporters in Toronto the 22-year-old, who is believed to have been shot in the early hours of Sunday, Aug. 24, did not have a criminal record.

Police say Rouse had been in contact with family in the days prior to his death, but they are seeking more details about his movements.

"We have no sense of what Evan was doing there," Gray said. "He's not from that area, and we're looking for anybody who knows him from Toronto to call us and tell us if they know where he was or what he was doing in the days preceding his death."

Rouse was known to frequent Toronto's downtown core.

He was found wearing black Converse All-Star sneakers, white socks, and blue denim shorts with blue sports shorts underneath. He was also wearing a red sweatshirt with a white motif and a red baseball cap with a white motif.

Police have not revealed whether they have identified a motive in Rouse's death, but said, "At this point we're working with many theories."

Police are asking anyone with information to call the homicide squad at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.
