PICKERING, Ont. - A 61-year-old Pickering, Ont., man is facing an assault charge after a bylaw officer was injured while trying to ticket a car.

Durham regional police say a driver became verbally abusive when the bylaw officer tried to issue an infraction notice in front of a Pickering school on Wednesday afternoon.

Police say as the officer approached the vehicle to affix the ticket, the officer was struck twice with the car.

Police say the bylaw officer approached the vehicle again, and was hit with the driver's side door before the driver got out and physically assaulted the officer.

The bylaw officer's injuries were not serious.

James Kelly is charged with assaulting a peace officer.
