Students at public schools in Peel Region may have to start wearing uniforms next September, if their parents vote in favour of the new policy.
A new report brought before the Peel District School Board recommended that the board allow individual schools to implement their own policies on uniforms.
The report came after a uniform pilot project conducted at Central Peel Secondary School in Brampton, Ont., which launched in 2014. School officials said the uniforms helped improve student behaviour and resulted in fewer suspensions during the 2014-2015 school year.
The proposal was approved by the PDSB on Monday night, but the board decided to give parents the final say.
If parents agree, schools could be able to implement mandatory uniforms as early as the start of the next school year.
