TORONTO - Ontario Provincial Police say they've investigated 227 road deaths so far this year.

In 170 of those fatalities, police say distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving or failure to wear a seat belt were factors.

OPP say speeding and distracted driving in particular are in the lead, with both being significant factors in 48 deaths each.

Apparent failure to wear seatbelts was a factor in 45 deaths and impaired driving was a causal factor in 29 road deaths.

Police say motorists can expect to see an increased OPP presence on the roads over the Thanksgiving long weekend and are urging safe driving practices.
