TORONTO - Ontario's next lieutenant-governor is starting his new job immediately after Labour Day weekend.

David Onley will be sworn in as the Queen's next representative in Ontario on Sept. 5.

The former broadcaster -- who was stricken with polio as a child and now uses a motorized scooter -- says he is committed to raising the profile of people with disabilities during his term.

Onley says he wants to be a role model for disabled youngsters, since he had few people to look up to when he was a boy.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed Onley last month.

He replaces James Bartleman, who became the 27th lieutenant-governor in March 2002.
