Toronto police is investigating a stabbing in the city’s Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood that left a woman dead and a man injured.

Firefighters were first to arrive at to a home on Mould Avenue, located in the area of Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue, at around 6 a.m.

Once inside, they discovered the scene of a homicide in a bedroom in the basement.

Police confirmed that a woman was pronounced dead at the scene and a man was transported to hospital for treatment.

A police officer was seen getting into the ambulance with the injured man.

When asked if the man is in custody in connection with the stabbing, Duty Insp. Norm Proctor told CP24 that he could not comment.

"All I can say is that they’ve been transported," he added.

Homicide detectives have taken over the investigation.

Few details have been released about the incident and police have not yet released the age of the deceased.

Suspect information has also not been provided.

Neighbours described the street as “quiet.” It’s believed a family rented the basement of the bungalow and the owner resides on the main floor.

“I think it’s horrible to be honest,” said Giulio Moro, who lives nearby. “I don’t know what the commotion was, I didn’t hear any noise.

The home remains surrounded by police tape while forensic investigators comb through the basement for evidence.

The relationship between the deceased and the injured man is not yet known.
