Toronto City Coun. Norm Kelly said he's "honoured" after a public tribute at rapper Drake's annual music festival.

A photo of the 73-year-old was used as a sky-high backdrop during the Toronto-born rapper's show on Monday.

On Tuesday, Kelly posted an image of Drake, silhouetted by the giant backdrop, writing "Honoured."

Kelly and Drake have become unlikely allies after the councillor stood up for Drake, during a heated exchange between the Canadian star and U.S. rapper Meek Mill.

The feud began when Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill asked his 4.97 million Twitter followers to stop comparing him to Drake, in a message posted on July 22.

"He don't write his own raps! That's why he ain't tweet my album and he on it because he know we found out," Meek Mill wrote.

Coming to Drake's defence, Kelly told Meek Mill he was "no longer welcome in Toronto."

Meek Mill wrote back, calling the councillor a "thug."

Following the exchange, Kelly wrote to his 74,500 Twitter followers that he would be taking a two-week break from the social media site to "charge up," the name of a new Drake song.

He then broke his promise on Wednesday, posting a photo of himself, standing back-to-back with a mirror image of himself. The photo was a reference to another new Drake song, "Back to Back," which slams Meek Mill for being on tour with his girlfriend Nicki Minaj.

As a thank you for the Twitter defence, Kelly was personally invited to Drake's two-day annual music festival OVO Fest on Instagram on Friday. Representatives of the councillor's office told reporters he would be out of town over the weekend, and would not be able to be at the show.

Though Kelly was unable to make an appearance, his Twitter photo resurfaced on Monday. Drake performed back-to-back tracks that insult Meek Mill, with memes of the rapper playing on the screen behind him. At the end of the tracks, the giant image of Kelly appeared on screen.

In addition to Drake's three-hour set at the Molson Amphitheatre, the rapper brought a series of surprise guests on stage. Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Travi$ Scott, Future and Skepta all appeared at the two-day event.

Rappers J. Cole, Big Sean, YG, Jeremih, Omen, Bas and Cozz also performed over the weekend.
