Police have thrown the book at a man who has been accused of stealing a police car and driving it into a building a few blocks away.

The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. Thursday near Weston Road and Lawrence Avenue West, Toronto police said Friday in a news release.

An office using a stealth vehicle equipped with a 12-gauge shotgun had been attending a collision scene.

"The vehicle was positioned to protect the persons involved in the collision, and had the emergency lighting system operating," police said.

The suspect allegedly got in the vehicle, drove it two blocks and collided with a building. He attempted to run away, but police officers caught up with him and made an arrest.

Police have charged Simon Jackson, 36, of no fixed address with:

  • theft over $5,000
  • possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • mischief; interfere with the lawful use of property
  • mischief under $5,000
  • two counts of fail to comply with probation

He was to make a court appearance on Friday.
