Barrie police charged a father and son with dozens of firearm and explosive offences following the search of a home at the centre of a 30-year-old cold case.

Police laid 44 charges in connection with improvised explosive devices against William Feldhoff, 75, and Donald Feldhoff, 54, on Wednesday. William has also been charged with 39 firearm offences.

Police visited the home after making a breakthrough in the 30-year-old murder investigation of Barrie resident Michael Traynor. The 26-year-old was reported missing by his family on Sept. 18, 1978, and his body was found several weeks later with obvious signs of trauma.

On July 11, police said Donald turned himself in to police. He has been charged with first-degree murder. His father, William, has been charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact.

Investigators have said there is no evidence linking the explosives and the murder case. The investigation into Traynor’s murder is ongoing.

More than 50 Barrie residents were displaced for several days as Barrie police and the RCMP removed scores of explosive devices and chemical weapons from the Virgilwood Crescent home.
