OTTAWA -- Authorities say a moose that disrupted traffic on a highway in Ottawa has been euthanized.

A spokeswoman with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry says the moose blocked traffic for several hours on Highway 417 on Thursday morning.

Jolanta Kowalski says a veterinarian advised that euthanizing the moose was the safest option for the public.

Police say the moose was noticed around 4 a.m. and blocked two lanes of traffic.

They say roads have now been cleared.
