A 21-year-old man is in serious condition after being shot twice and left for dead in a field between townhouse complexes in North York.

Toronto police said the victim was shot once in the upper torso and stomach on Driftwood Avenue, in the Jane Street and Finch Avenue area, at about 1 a.m. on Saturday.

After being shot, the man, a Brampton resident, called his mother. She lives in Peel, the Toronto Star reports.

She called Peel Regional Police, who notified the Toronto force.

Officers found the victim lying in an open field and took him to Sunnybrook hospital. He is expected to survive because the bullets missed his organs, police said.

Investigators have not commented on a motive, and no suspect descriptions have been released.

Officers were still waiting to speak to the victim to find out what happened, but said he will be taken into custody because he is a suspect in a number of robberies.
