A Toronto-area family is mourning the loss of their son after he was killed in a car crash with a parked cube van.

The man, believed to be in his early twenties, was in a silver Mazda Precidia when it crashed on St. Clair Avenue East near Brimley Road.

Video footage of the scene showed the front-end of the car was completely smashed in.

The accident happened at around 8 p.m. Friday.

The brother of the victim was also riding in the car when it crashed but he escaped with minor injuries.

He was soon joined by family members at the scene. One woman was so overcome with grief, she couldn't leave the car and was driven away.

Police closed off both directions of St. Clair Avenue while they conducted their investigation. Traffic Services kept the street closed for hours while they looked for clues on what caused the car to crash.
