A 33-year-old man is facing impaired driving charges after a pedestrian was struck and suffered life-threatening injuries in Scarborough early Wednesday morning.

The victim, a 23-year-old man, was crossing Danforth Road near McCowan Road at around 12:30 a.m. when he was struck by a northbound vehicle.

Police said they believe the victim was jaywalking while he was drunk. Police allege the driver was also drunk.

Officers arrested the driver at the scene. The 23-year-old man was taken to hospital, where he remains in life-threatening condition, according to Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe.

Toronto resident Kunal Bulland was charged with impaired operation causing bodily harm and over 80 milligrams causing bodily harm, Stibbe said.

"You know what? It's troubling. The operations of motor vehicles, you need to be sober at all times. Even one drink will begin to give you some form of impairment,” Stibbe said.

As of yesterday, there have been 882 impaired driving arrests so far this year in Toronto -- 30 less than the same time last year.

Stibbe also said alleged impaired driving fatalities are up. There were three at this time last year, he said, but this year there are seven.
