A 60-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of a woman in an Etobicoke apartment.

Police said a distraught man called 911 just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday saying he had murdered and decapitated a woman inside a highrise at 545 The West Mall, near Rathburn Road and Highway 427.

Officers arrived at one of the penthouse suites and found the body of a lifeless woman in her early 50s. Police said she had not been decapitated, but had deep cuts to her neck area.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday to determine the exact cause of death.

A man was arrested at the scene and charged Wednesday. Police are not releasing his name or his relationship to the victim, but said he lived at the residence.

There were children living in the apartment but they weren't home at the time of the incident, police said.

The accused appeared at the Finch Avenue courts on Wednesday. The slaying marked the city's 12th homicide of the year.
