The man accused in the high-profile death of Sgt. Ryan Russell will appear before a judge on Friday morning.

Richard Kachkar, 44, was initially held in protective custody at a Toronto hospital because he was injured during his arrest. He has since been transferred.

However, it's unlikely that Kachkar will actually appear in person before the court at College Park.

Sources tell CTV Toronto that Kachkar has been in the hospital ward of the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton on Thursday being treated for police-inflicted gunshot wounds.

On Friday, he will likely face the court via video-link.

Sgt. Russell was remembered Tuesday in a public funeral at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. He died after being struck by a snowplow early on Jan. 12.

Kachkar faces a first-degree murder charge. It is possible that lawyers will order a psychiatric assessment.
