A 22-year-old man has died in hospital from his injuries following a shooting in the city’s west end early Thursday morning.

Police told CTV News that 22-year-old Anthony Smith died of his injuries just after noon.

Smith and another man in his 20s were rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a shooting near King and Portland streets.

According to police at the scene, the men were walking along the north side of King Street when they were approached from behind by an unknown assailant as they reached Portland Street at around 2:30 a.m.

One of the men was shot twice in the back of the head while the other man was shot in the torso and the arm.

Several shell casings were found at the scene and a bullet hole was visible in a nearby bus shelter early Thursday.

No suspect information is available.

King Street was closed in both directions between Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue, but was reopened at around 6:30 a.m.
