Alcohol may have played a role in a crash Friday that cost a Whitby woman her leg.

The 41-year-old victim was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital after a car hit her on Highway 401. She remains in hospital in critical condition.

The woman was hit as she was changing a tire on her car in the highway's westbound lanes at Port Union Road around 9 p.m.

Another man was also hit but he only suffered minor injuries.

A 66-year-old suspect has been arrested.

Police are investigating if alcohol was a factor in the collision.
