Less than a week after Ontario's provincial election, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath appointed two veteran party members to key positions in the minority government.

Horwath named Gilles Bisson, from Timmins-James Bay, as House Leader. Cheri DiNovo, who represents the Toronto riding of Parkdale-High Park, was named Party Whip.

"Gilles and Cheri bring experience, skill and a desire to make this Legislature work for everyday people," Horwath said in a statement released Wednesday.

"I know our new MPPs, and all Ontarians, can count on them for real leadership at Queen's Park."

Horwath's party secured 17 seats in the Oct. 6 election, up from 10 in the last election.

Dalton McGuinty's Liberal Party was returned to power with 53 seats in last week's election – one seat short a majority. The two opposition parties have a combined 54 seats in the 107-seat legislature at Queen's Park.

Horwath also said that her party would hold its first caucus meeting Thursday in Toronto.

However, McGuinty has yet to determine when legislature would resume.

"New Democrats are ready to get to work," Horwath said. "Thousands of people put their trust in New Democrats last week and we won't let them down. We're ready to make this Legislature work and find solutions to the challenges facing families -- creating good jobs, making life affordable, and improving our health care system."

Horwath is also expected to name critic portfolios in the coming days.
