York Regional Police said Thursday that its homicide division has taken over the investigation of a Richmond Hill woman missing for more than six weeks.

Cheryl Rowe was last seen by her family on Dec. 21, 2011, at approximately 11:30 p.m. at a home on Browndale Crescent in the Bayview Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive area.

Police said an ongoing investigation has led them to believe that Rowe may be the victim of foul play.

Police released an undated photo of Rowe taken from surveillance video tapes at a Richmond Hill convenience store. In the picture she is seen wearing a white baseball hat with a distinctive green leaf on the front.

"We (released) that photograph hoping that someone might recognize the image," said Sgt. Gary Phillips. "We're just hoping that anyone who might have been in that area at the time or someone who recognizes that hat or has any information whatsoever can come forward."

Rowe, 45, is described as white, approximately five feet tall, 125 pounds with a thin build. She has short, dark brown hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing dark-coloured jeans, a light-blue two-toned jacket, purple Adidas running shoes and a white baseball hat with a green leaf on the front.
