Batten down the hatches and cuddle up inside as a fall storm with heavy rain and gusting winds is expected to hammer Toronto Wednesday night.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Toronto and surrounding areas, including most of southern and eastern Ontario. Heavy rain is predicted to start in Toronto at 11 or 11:30 p.m.

Up to 50 millimetres of rain or more is predicted to fall in the region by approximately 8 a.m. Thursday morning and strong east to northeast winds reaching 40 to 50 km/h are forecasted, with gusts up to 70 km/h possible.

Along the western shore of Lake Ontario, wind warnings are in effect as gusts up to 90 km/h are expected Wednesday evening.

Drivers are warned to take extra precautions as low visibility and strong winds will make driving conditions difficult.

The temperature is forecast to stay steady at about 10 degrees Celsius for most of the night.

By Thursday morning, the rain is expected to ease to scattered showers.
