Only a handful of Toronto Hydro customers are still in the dark after intense gusts of wind associated with superstorm Sandy knocked out power to thousands of customers.

The city’s hydro crews are working to restore power to the few that remain without it and are also turning their attention to clean-up work, Toronto Hydro said in a bulletin Thursday.

The massive storm carried unrelenting rain and strong winds into parts of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes early this week. High winds lashed against hydro lines, leaving more than 150,000 Ontarians without power at the height of the storm.

Nearly all Ontarians that experienced power outages related to the storm have had service restored, Ontario Energy Minister Chris Bentley said in a statement.

“Hydro One has made great progress restoring power to families and businesses across Ontario. They are now in a position to be able to help our friends in the United States,” he said.

Bentley said Hydro One has sent 145 workers south of the border, to Massachusetts, to help restore power in the Boston area.

The workers -- which include line maintainers and support staff -- are expected to reach Massachusetts late Friday.
