Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was struck and killed by falling debris in Toronto, in what appears to be the first Canadian fatality of superstorm Sandy.

The woman was walking in a parking lot underneath a Staples Depot sign in the Keele Street and St. Clair Avenue West area on Monday evening as winds gusted 60 km/h.

Police said a portion of the sign came loose, fell and struck the woman, who is believed to be in her 50s.

The woman suffered head and neck injuries. Emergency crews performed CPR on the woman, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sign itself remained mostly intact, though it was reported to still be swaying in strong winds.

Police said the woman’s name will not be released.
