The Gardiner Expressway might be back open after a weekend of maintenance, but traffic headaches on the route are just beginning.

One lane in each direction will be blocked around Jameson Ave. for the foreseeable future. That's so that extensive repair work can begin on three bridges.

The eastbound and westbound Gardiner have already been reduced from three lanes to two through the Jameson Ave. area, so that repairs can begin on three bridges: at Jameson, Dunn and Dowling avenues.

The bridges are in bad enough shape that they need to be mostly rebuilt. Demolition of the Jameson bridge over the Gardiner has already begun. But all of the bridge work is expected to take until at least November to complete.

Lanes are expected to be reduced throughout the construction on that stretch of the Gardiner and drivers can expect long delays.

Those delays will come on top of other maintenance and resurfacing already scheduled for the Gardiner.

As well, there are planned closures for parts or all of the expressway for the Ride for Heart on June 6, and delays and closures for the G8 and G20 summits, between June 21 and 28.

Many drivers have already started using Lakeshore Blvd. as an alternate, and that route is also becoming very busy.
