A massive freight train derailment early Monday that caused numerous delays is being blamed on a broken wheel.

A preliminary investigation by CN Rail found one of 19 cars that derailed had a problem with one of its wheels when the train derailed at around 1 a.m.

"At that time 19 cars of 139 cars left the track but some of those remained upright," said CN spokesman Frank Binder. "At this point we're in the process of doing a cleanup and recovery."

No dangerous materials were spilled and nobody was injured in the crash.

However, the derailment caused serious delays for Via Rail and Go Transit commuters throughout southwestern Ontario.

Most Via Rail trains were delayed for about 50 minutes while Go Trains didn't travel past Burlington.

"It's a little frustrating, but what can you do about it," one delayed passenger told CTV Toronto.

At first, officials said they hoped to clear the rails by midnight but by Monday evening, they said the clean-up will take well into the morning. They said they are optimistic the rails will be cleared in time for Tuesday's morning rush.
