Family and friends of the man who was fatally shot at the annual Caribbean Carnival parade gathered at a Whitby funeral home on Saturday to say their goodbyes.
Kevin Murray, 30, died at St. Michael's Hospital after gunfire erupted between police and three men along the parade route on July 30.
The province's Special Investigation Unit said shots were fired after officers "interacted with the men" on Lake Shore Boulevard West.
A Montreal witness who was at the parade said he saw three men fighting over a gun in the middle of a crowded street.
Rike Specogna told CTV Toronto he saw Murray break away from the group with a weapon before he was shot.
Two other people were also wounded in the incident.
At the time of the shooting, Murray was on the Crime Stoppers "Most Wanted" list for a number of charges including break and enter, assault and mischief.
But despite his past, mourners say that's not how they want Murray to be remembered.
Speaking on behalf of Murray's mother, Georgina Murray, Jacqueline Anderson said at the funeral that father of six had a "huge heart."
"When you think of Kevin please think of his captivating smile and his huge heart. Remember the man who would give the shirt off his back to the people he loved," she said.
The SIU investigation into the incident is ongoing.
