A Montreal man who was at the Toronto Caribbean Carnival parade on Saturday when a 30-year-old man was fatally shot says he witnessed three men fighting over a gun in the middle of a crowded street.
Riko Specogna told CTV Toronto he and his girlfriend heard two shots being fired after the parade had ended. Specogna said he laughed at first because he thought the noise came from firecrackers but then afterwards, he watched in shock as three men were brawling over what appeared to be a small caliber handgun.
Megan Martin, a Pickering woman who was dressed in a Carnival costume at the time, was shot in the liver. Specogna said he caught a glimpse of her amidst the chaos, sitting on the ground.
"She was crying and her friend was freaking out, saying that she was shot," Specogna said.
The 21-year-old woman, who was a substitute in a Maz band, has since undergone surgery to remove the bullet and is recovering in hospital.
Specogna, who videoed the aftermath of the shooting with his phone, said he also saw Amrit Boodram, the 18-year-old whose eyebrow was grazed by a bullet, clutching his eye.
Specogna said both Boodram and Martin had already been shot before 30-year-old Kevin Murray was gunned down.
Specogna said he saw Murray break away from the group that had been fighting for the gun and ran.
"He yelled something. It was inaudible to me at the time. The man tripped and stumbled and dropped the weapon," Specogna said.
Specogna said Murray caught himself from the fall and picked up the gun and that's when Toronto Police fired three shots at him.
"The image is burned in my brain," Specogna said.
Murray was pronounced dead at hospital.
Ontario's Special Investigation United released the names of the victims of the shooting on Tuesday.
