An anguished woman called on those who shot her brother-in-law to death outside a Dundas Street West pizzeria to do the right thing and surrender.

"Ken was our community liaison person. Ken was a backbone of our community -- and you took that away from our community," Earla Mark said Tuesday about Kenneth Mark, Toronto's 62nd homicide victim of 2009.

"So we are asking you, give yourselves to the police and take responsibility for your actions -- please, whoever is responsible for this gruesome crime."

Kenneth Mark left a Dundas Street West pizzeria on Dec. 29 in the Junction neighbourhood and walked north on Gilmour Avenue. His two assailants came up on him from behind and shot him in the head.

Paramedics got him to hospital, but doctors couldn't save his life.

Security cameras in the area have given police some images of the suspects.

Mark had reportedly tried to keep local youths away from gang members who had been trying to recruit them. He had previously been attacked.

"By all accounts, this was a very fine man, a very hardworking individual and a good citizen in his community," Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters. "And I think it is a tragedy not only for his family but for his community.

"In these circumstances, we need people to come forward who have information," Blair said. "We have some very active leads in this investigation and our people are working very diligently on it, but it takes time to gather the evidence we need to successfully prosecute."

Police have previously released video of a person of interest in the case.

The Mark family plans to hold a vigil tonight, and will hold another news conference with police on Thursday. A funeral is planned for Saturday.
