A potentially-deadly early morning crash on Highway 401 ended without any serious injuries on Wednesday after a tractor trailer tipped over, pinning a car between two containers filled with gravel.

The crash closed all lanes in both directions between Mavis Road and Hurontario Street near Mississauga through the morning commute as highway crews separated a truck from the silver Honda Civic it had nearly crushed.

The driver inside the car escaped without injury as the truck's containers crumpled the sedan's hood and trunk, leaving the cab relatively untouched.

"The car got trapped in between both of the trailers, so the trailers didn't fall directly onto it. He got trapped in between both," OPP Const. Ian Michel said from the scene. "It was a fantastic spot to get trapped."

Witnesses say the crash happened shortly after 5:30 a.m., when a black Volkswagen Jetta changed lanes and collided with the trailer, causing it to lose control and overturn.

Dalgit Panglia, 20, of Rexdale, said he is still wondering how he made it out alive.

"How did I survive, honestly" he said.

Panglia said he had just dropped his dad off at work in Milton and he was heading back to Rexdale when he saw a truck tip over and slam onto the hood of his car.

The truck's load of gravel spilled across the highway during the collision and Panglia managed to escape the wreck by crawling out of the back window of his car.

"Nothing really happened. I felt I was fine…not a scratch," he said.

Panglia's mother said she saw the crash covered in the news and decided to phone her son.

"She called me and said, ‘Was that you in the gravel truck in the news?' And I said yeah," said Panglia.

The incident was the second close call Panglia had experienced this year. A few months ago, he was driving a pickup truck and was cut off by another driver, causing him to crash into a tree.

The 48-year-old driver of the Volkswagen was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has been charged with careless driving.

Witness Slawek Pietraszek said the driver was "swerving all over and he was going way slower than most of the other traffic."

Westbound lanes and all but one eastbound lane were re-opened before noon.

The southbound ramp connecting Hwy. 410 to Hwy. 401 was also re-opened as officials cleared the scene.
