A 31-year-old man has been charged after a passenger died when a Porsche crashed into a building in Toronto’s East Bayfront area.

Police received a call for the collision just before 6:15 p.m. on July 2 and arrived at a building located at 200 Queen’s Quay East, near Parliament Street and Lake Shore Boulevard.

The 2009 Porsche 911 was going eastbound on Queen’s Quay East when the driver lost control of the car, police said. It veered off the road and then struck the building.

A 35-year-old woman who was a passenger inside the car suffered from life-threatening injuries, police said.

She was taken to hospital, but was later pronounced dead. The male driver was also taken to hospital with unknown injuries, according to police.

Toronto Fire Capt. David Eckerman was on the scene on July 2 and said the vehicle had been lodged in the building after the crash and its back end caught fire. It was extinguished around 6:20 p.m., he said.

On Tuesday, police arrested Kitchener resident Joseph Kirkpatrick. He was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

He appeared in court later the same day.

Police have still not determined why the driver lost control of the car. They are seeking the public’s help to identify any witnesses who offered assistance to the victims after the collision.

Specifically, police said they are looking for two male witnesses who were on scene and removed both the passenger and driver from the vehicle.

The first witness was described as a brown man aged 30 to 40 with wavy, medium-length black hair on top and shorter on the sides. He was described as having a full beard, a black watch on his left wrist, a light-coloured bracelet on his right wrist, a white plaid top, light full-length blue jeans, black shoes, possibly high-tops or work boots with gold or yellow writing and gold-rimmed dark sunglasses.

The second was described as a white man, aged 35 to 40 with a medium build, short brown hair with sideburns and full goatee, with few days' growth of facial hair. He was described as being medium build and wearing a medium-blue golf shirt, dark-blue shorts, yellow bracelet on right wrist, light-grey, dark-grey and white running shoes.

Police are asking witnesses to contact them at 416-808-1900 with any information.
