Toronto Councillor Doug Ford said he will run for the Progressive Conservatives if Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty calls a provincial election.

Ford made his comments in a phone conversation with CP24 Friday afternoon, the day after McGuinty said he will be forced to call an election if opposition parties continue with planned amendments to the Liberals' provincial budget.

The brother of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford said Friday that no one wants an election, and the ultimate decision will be up to McGuinty.

"If Dalton McGuinty decides to call an election next week, I'll be there supporting a great leader named Tim Hudak," Ford said. "He'd be a fabulous premier and I know Tim Hudak would change the fiscal foundation of this province."

Ford warned that McGuinty will be held accountable should he choose to call an election.

"If he's going to call an election, then he's going to be held accountable by the people of Toronto," Ford said. "Not by Doug Ford, but by the people of Toronto, the people of Ontario."

Existing laws would allow Ford to keep his seat as councillor while simultaneously running for a provincial party.

During the last provincial election, Ford actively campaigned for PC candidates in the Toronto area and publically endorsed PC leader Hudak.

Mayor Rob Ford, however, kept a lower profile during the campaign.
