It's something most Torontonians already know, but an American economist's recent blog post declaring Scarborough the "best ethnic food suburb" he's ever visited has raised its profile south of the border.

Tyler Cowen, the author of "An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies," recently visited the Toronto suburb as part of a University of Toronto-Scarborough food studies initiative.

During his visit last week, he toured four different Scarborough eateries, and even ate rolls from a Sri Lanka restaurant at the U of T Scarborough dean's office.

"After that eating, and lots of driving around and looking, I concluded Scarborough is the best ethnic food suburb I have seen in my life, ever, and by an order of magnitude," he wrote in his blog. "I hope you all have the chance to visit Scarborough."

Cowen's post has been sparking lots of discussion on his website and on Reddit with some commentators saying that downtown residents in Toronto often overlook what Scarborough has to offer.

"People who start up restaurants here are probably the people who bring the most accurate sense of cuisine from their original country," one commentator said.

"The Chinese food in the Agincourt area is much more authentic," said another. "There are even regional restaurants."
