TORONTO - The teen charged with killing a police officer who died last week after being pinned under a minivan will have his first court hearing Thursday.

A spokeswoman for York Regional Police says the 15-year-old boy, who faces a first-degree murder charge, will not appear in person in Newmarket, Ont.

Instead, Const. Rebecca Boyd says the hearing is expected to be held by telephone.

Police said earlier the youth was seriously injured in the incident on June 28 in which Const. Garrett Styles was killed.

The teen is reported to be in a Toronto hospital with injuries that may have left him paralysed.

Thousands of uniformed officers and members of the public turned out for Styles' funeral in Newmarket north of Toronto on Tuesday.
