Three police officers helped rescue the occupant of a vehicle involved in a fiery, hit-and-run crash at McCowan and 401.

"Three 43 Division officers, who were in the area at the time, saw a vehicle burst into flames," the Toronto Police Service said in a news release.

"The officers immediately tried to get to the vehicle to see if there was anyone inside," it said, adding they had to scramble over a chain-link fence.

The officers saw a hand waving inside the vehicle's smoky interior. They broke the vehicle's windows and found a lone occupant. They used fire extinguishers on the falmes and worked to free the drive.

"Given the smoke and flames that were building, the driver would have died if we hadn't been right there at the time of the collision," an unnamed officer was quoted as saying.

The accident happened early Wednesday morning in the eastbound ramp to McCowan from the 401.

The victim's car was clipped by another, went off the ramp, burst into flames. Paramedics took one person to hospital. The officers were treated at the scene for minor cuts and smoke inhalation.

Witnesses said the suspect vehicle went north on McCowan.

On Tuesday, five people were injured in a hit-and-run involving a TTC bus, a transport truck and a minivan.

At about 3 p.m., a van travelling north on Rivermede Road near Highway 7 and Dufferin crossed into the southbound lanes and hit a TTC bus head-on.

The bus ran off the road, hitting a transport truck in the process.

Police, including K-9 units, pursued the van's driver. He had fled on foot but police captured him after a short chase.
