The construction worker who died in a roof collapse at a construction project in Mississauga has been identified as Christopher Crawford of Kitchener.
The 33-year-old sheet metal worker was trapped for more than an hour when a metal structure collapsed at the Sheridan Centre Mall job site Monday.
Firefighters raced to free him, but he died of his injuries by the time he was pulled out.
According to a death notice posted online, Crawford leaves behind his wife, Tabitha, and three children.
In an interview Tuesday, friend Angela Nuhn told CTV Toronto that Crawford was a vivacious, outgoing individual who was always surrounded by friends and family.
The president of the sub-contractor Crawford worked for, Vixman Construction, issued a statement of condolence Tuesday.
"Words are simply not enough, but our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, children, family and others that have been touched by the tragedy," Daryl Brisco said.
Crawford was on a team of workers who were installing metal roofing when the collapse occurred.
Now, the Ministry of Labour is working to determine what went wrong, and whether Crawford could have been saved.
To facilitate the investigation, the ministry has ordered the company running the project, PCL Constructors Canada, not to disturb the scene of the incident until the investigation is complete. The company has also been ordered to hand over paperwork that explains what was happening at the site when Crawford was killed.
