An elderly woman has died after a two-alarm fire broke out at a Mississauga condominium on Tuesday.

Police say they were called at around 12:40 p.m. for a fire in a building at 965 Inverhouse Dr. near Lakeshore Road West and Southdown Road in the Clarkson area. The caller said there was smoke pouring out of a broken window.

The building was evacuated and firefighters removed a woman in a wheelchair in her 80s who required defibrillation, according to Peel police.

The woman, who lived on the third floor of the building, was taken to Trillium Health Centre with severe burns and no vital signs at around 1 p.m, police say. She was later pronounced dead.

Const. George Tudos said the suspected cause of death is smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported in the blaze. Residents are being allowed back into the building, except for those who live on the third floor.

Some roads surrounding the building were blocked off by police so fire trucks could access the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
