A 20-year-old Brampton man has been sentenced to 23 months in jail for his role in a fatal crash that claimed the life of a taxi driver last spring.

The collision happened in the early hours of June 5, 2009 when a Honda Prelude driven by Jaikar Gill collided with a taxi in the intersection of Bovaird Drive and Dixie Road just before 1:30 a.m.

The taxi burst into flames as a result of the collision. The fire killed the male driver. A 21-year-old Brampton woman who was also riding in the cab was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries.

A Nissan Altima was also struck in the collision, but its passengers were not injured.

Within hours, Gill was charged in connection with the fatal crash, an apparent drunk driving collision.

The Toronto Star reported last month that Gill pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death. A number of other charges were withdrawn.

A spokesperson for the Ontario Attorney General's office said that in addition to the jail sentence, Gill has been suspended from driving for 10 years and must provide a DNA sample.
