The uncle of a little girl who died after an alleged incident at a Mississauga daycare says the child was violently shaken before her death.

Johnson Nguyen said that investigators informed the family of the injuries following Wednesday's incident, CTV Toronto's John Musselman reported.

Nguyen added that his family is struggling to cope with the death of 14-month-old Duy-An Nguyen, and that his sister is having a hard time with the loss of her baby.

On Wednesday, Peel emergency officials received a call about a child who was in distress at a Mississauga home.

An emergency crew later found Duy-An suffering from head injuries, and she was rushed to a local hospital. However, after being transferred to a Toronto hospital, she died on Friday.

Meanwhile, the lawyer for the Mississauga daycare worker accused in the death said his client may not be safe while in custody.

Lawyer Bruce Dailey said that client April Luckese should be segregated from other prisoners and protected from any potential abuse. Luckese is facing a second-degree murder charge.

Luckese was in front of a judge on Saturday for a short court appearance in Brampton, but she was remanded into custody pending her next appearance.

Dailey said that his client, who will make her next court appearance on Tuesday is "not doing very well."

He added that "two families have been devastated here."

Luckese, who ran an unlicensed homecare business called April's Daycare in Mississauga, was initially charged with aggravated assault. However, that charge was upgraded following the child's death.
