TORONTO - An inquiry into the work of discredited child pathologist Dr. Charles Smith is a step closer to fruition now that all parties that requested standing have received it.

In a ruling released Friday, Justice Stephen Gouge granted standing to all 11 groups and individuals who applied, meaning all those with a stake in the outcome of the inquiry will be allowed to give evidence and question witnesses.

Two family groups including people who were convicted as a result of Smith's forensic work were among those to receive standing.

Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, where Smith was director of the pediatric forensic pathology Unit, and the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted were also granted standing.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty called the inquiry after an expert panel questioned the findings in 20 of 45 child death cases handled by Smith since 1991.

Public hearings are expected to begin in late fall.
