Durham Regional Police say a targeted shooting in Cannington on Monday led to the discovery of a warehouse full of illegal cannabis.

Police say the shooting happened around 3 a.m. in the area of Peace and Davidson streets.

Video footage captured the sound of gunshots, and a search of the area revealed a nearby warehouse as the target, investigators say.

Officers subsequently discovered a cannabis grow-op inside the warehouse and seized nearly 29,000 cannabis plants alongside a quantity of dried cannabis.

No one was injured in the shooting, police say.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham police or Crimestoppers.

The investigation comes amid an uptick in neighbourhood-area shootings in Durham region.

Police say two homes were hit by bullets in Whitby early Thursday morning just one day after a housing complex in Oshawa saw 14 shots fired while families were sleeping overnight.

Durham officers are also investigating shots fired at two homes in Ajax on Thurs. Dec. 12 that they say are linked to tow truck violence.

Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira responded to the recent increase in gun violence on X Thursday morning writing in part, "we are committed to dedicating more resources to preventing and investigating gun related crimes."
