A 24-year-old man is dead and another man was rushed to hospital after a shooting Monday evening in the west end of Toronto.

Toronto Police say both men were in a Nissan vehicle  heading southbound on Jane Street near Eglinton Avenue at the time of the incident.

"A lone gunman approached from the rear of the vehicle and fired numerous rounds into the vehicle into the back and into the driver’s side… striking and killing the 24 year-old who was driving the vehicle," Det.-Sgt. Hank Idsinga told reporters late Monday night.

The shooting happened at 6:45 p.m. The 24-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 23-year-old man, was taken to Sunnybrook hospital in serious condition. Police say he is expected to fully recover.

Police have not released a description of the suspect but say the shooting was a “targeted act.”

"I don’t believe it was a road-rage incident," Idsinga said.

Investigators say there were “numerous witnesses” at the time of the shooting, including passengers who were on board a TTC bus that was in the passing lane at the time of the incident.
