A 28-year-old woman was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy street in Vaughan Wednesday evening.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene near Dufferin Street and Major Mackenzie Drive shortly after 7 p.m.

According to police the woman, who lives in the neighbourhood, was trying to cross Mackenzie Drive at Sir Benson Drive when she was struck.

First responders arrived to find the woman suffering from a head injury. The victim, originally said by police to be a man, was rushed to a trauma centre in critical condition.

Police later said her condition had been upgraded to non-life-threatening.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating, police said.  

Major Mackenzie Drive has been closed both ways between Dufferin Street and Sir Benson Drive as police investigate the collision.
