BARRIE, Ont. -- Police say a couple of on-duty undercover provincial police officers helped foil a pair of shoplifters at a store in Barrie, Ont.

Barrie police say the officers noticed a 37-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman park next to the store's emergency exit on Thursday night and cover their licence plates with napkins.

The man then entered the store and filled shopping bags with airsoft guns, clothing, headphones and speakers before bursting out of the emergency exit, setting off the alarm.

When the officers identified themselves and confronted the suspects, police say the man swung one of the merchandise-filled bags, striking an officer in the head.

The man and woman were arrested following a struggle and face numerous charges.

The officer did not require medical attention.

Investigators suspect the couple planned to use the hooded clothing and replica firearms to "continue their crime spree."

The man is charged with assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, theft under $5,000, and breach of probation, while the woman is charged with theft under $5,000 and resisting arrest.
