After a day of spring-like temperatures, the City of Toronto has issued another extreme cold weather alert – the 35th of the season.

The mercury is expected to hover around -3 C throughout Saturday afternoon, before plunging to a low of -16 C tonight, Environment Canada predicts.

The alert marks the 35th day Toronto has been under such an alert this winter. In comparison, there were only nine extreme cold weather days last season.

Extreme cold weather alerts are called when it is expected overnight temperatures will dip below -15 C or lower, without wind chill. When an alert is triggered, the city adds 26 shelter spaces and Toronto's Metro Hall is opened as a warming centre at 3 p.m.

On Sunday, the bitter cold is expected to stay as temperatures are predicted to fall to a low of -25 C with the wind chill, Environment Canada says.
