TORONTO -- Toronto police say a 20-year-old stabbing victim was found by his mother after he collapsed just outside his west-end home Monday night.

Police say Michael Cocomello -- also known as Michael Mandino -- was fatally stabbed in a targeted attack but they have no motive and no suspects in the case.

Insp. Ken Taylor says police called to the scene (near Eglinton Avenue West and Dufferin Street) around 9:15 p.m Monday found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds.

Taylor says investigators believe Cocomello left his apartment shortly before he was stabbed, but they don't know why.

He says it appears the victim was trying to return home before he collapsed just outside his apartment, and one of the first people to find him and try to help him was his mother.

He was taken to Sunnybrook hospital where he underwent surgery but later succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy was being conducted Tuesday.

Taylor says Cocomello was known to police but that his contact with them was "dated" and has no relation to his killing.

The victim's mother is "distraught," said Taylor.

"I can't imagine what it would be like to come out and find your son or anybody in that state," he said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact investigators. The case is the city's 10th homicide of the year.
