A 17-year-old robbery suspect is in hospital Monday after being shot by police at a Pickering, Ont., veterinary clinic.

Durham Regional Police said in a statement that officers were called to investigate an ongoing robbery at a vet clinic on Kingston Road, near Glengrove Road.

An officer arrived at the Sheridan Veterinary Services and confronted a lone male suspect outside of the building. Police say the suspect was shot during the confrontation.

The suspect was rushed to a Toronto hospital suffering life-threatening injuries.

Several orange cones, used by police to mark shell casings, were seen on the street outside the clinic Monday morning.

Local resident Pat Speers witnessed the shooting and told CP24 that two officers “emptied their guns” after confronting a suspect outside the building.

Speers said the first officer to arrive demanded the suspect surrender.

“Within seconds he pulled out of his car, told him to stop and emptied his gun,” Speers said.

Other witnesses said there were about five shots in total, coming in quick succession at first and then slowly near the end.

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit has been contacted to investigate the incident. The SIU is called to investigate any death or injury involving police.

Kingston Road is expected to remain closed between Glenanna and Glengrove Roads during the investigation.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SIU at 416-622-1935.

In particular, police said they want to speak to three women who may have been waiting at a nearby bus stop at the time of the shooting.
